How to Prepare for a Kitchen Renovation: Expert Tips from an Interior Designer

Planning a kitchen renovation?

It’s exciting, but let’s be honest, it can also feel a little overwhelming. With so many decisions to make and things to coordinate, it’s easy to get lost in the process.

As an Interior Designer, I’ve helped clients navigate kitchen remodels from start to finish, and I know that a little preparation goes a long way.

Whether you’re tackling your own kitchen or helping a client through a renovation, these simple steps will keep the project on track and (relatively) stress-free!

1. Start with a Clear Vision

Before tearing anything out, take a step back and think about what you really want from your new kitchen. Ask yourself;

• What’s not working in the current space?

• How do you want to use the space that you don’t have the opportunity to currently?

• What are your must-have’s (more storage, bigger island, better lighting)?

• How do you want your new kitchen to feel (like the hub of the home that everyone is comfortable to relax in)?

Pro Tip: Creating a mood board with inspiration images is a great way to get focused. It also helps keep decisions consistent as the project moves forward.

2. Set a Realistic Budget

It’s easy to get carried away when designing a dream kitchen, but setting a budget from the start will help keep everything in check. A good rule of thumb:

• Allocate 40-50% of the budget to labor and installation (contractors, plumbers, electricians, cabinet makers).

• Set aside a minimum 10% for unexpected expenses (like plumbing issues or structural changes).

• Prioritize big-ticket items like cabinetry and countertops, then adjust other choices accordingly.

Pro Tip: If the budget is tight, make sure to prioritise the essentials - great cabinetry, durable countertops and functional lighting. .

3. Consider Layout and Function

A kitchen should be both beautiful and functional. I always focus on:

• Work Zones – Ensure there is an efficient flow between the stove, sink, refrigerator and bin!

• Storage Solutions – Custom solutions like appliance cupboards, deep drawers, and vertical dividers make a world of difference.

• Seating and Entertaining – If space allows, a well-designed island with seating creates a social hub in the heart of the kitchen.

Pro Tip: Beyond aesthetics, great lighting, durable surfaces, and easy-to-maintain finishes are just as important as the design itself.

4. Choose Materials and Finishes Early

Delays happen - that’s why I always encourage clients to select and order key materials in advance to help keep timelines on track, including:

• Cabinetry – Custom, semi-custom or stock? Shaker style or sleek and modern?

• Countertops – Engineered stone, natural stone, porcelain, timber or laminate? Each has its pros and cons - so consider what is right for you.

• Flooring – Consider solutions like durable tile, or vinyl, or enjoy a little luxury with engineered timber. Think about the durability and ease of cleaning.

• Backsplash & Hardware – These small details tie the entire look together, and can make or break a design.

Pro Tip: As an interior designer, I always encourage clients to choose materials that balance style, durability and maintenance - because no-one wants a kitchen they can’t use without fear of messing up!

5. Hire the Right Professionals

A successful kitchen renovation depends on a skilled team to bring everything together. I always advise clients to:

• Work with a licensed and experienced contractor to oversee the big stuff.

• Hire qualified plumbers and electricians for all of the behind-the-scenes work.

• Collaborate with a cabinet installer and countertop fabricator for precise installation.

• Look for a designer that understands your vision, and that you enjoy working with, but also someone who can show you where to reign in.

Pro Tip: If you’re working with a designer (like me!), I’ll help coordinate everything and make sure the final space matches your vision.

6. Set up a Temporary Kitchen & Prepare for the Reno

Let’s be real - living without a kitchen for weeks (or months) is tough. Make things easier by setting up a mini kitchen and prepare for:

• Renovations = Dust & Noise – Sealing off the kitchen area and covering furniture in nearby rooms to protect them from dust - your contractors might be able to help you with this if you’re unsure.

• Temporary Kitchen Setup – A microwave, air-fryer, coffee machine and an easy dishwashing station.

• Decluttering – Prepare to pack up the kitchen in an organised way - label boxes (also great for when you can’t find a particular pair of tongs) and donate any unused items - now is a fantastic time to declutter!

Pro Tip: Prepping some freezer meals ahead of time can also save you from too many nights of takeout!

7. Expect Some Delays

It’s easy to underestimate how long a kitchen renovation can take, the best way to handle it:

• Prepare for hiccups - stay flexible and open to problem solving.

• You don’t know what is happening behind the walls until demo day, so don’t be alarmed when surprises pop up. A little patience goes a long way!

Pro Tip: Unexpected delays (like backordered materials or hidden structural issues) are common. A little flexibility goes a long way!

8. Plan for the Final Details

Once the renovation is nearing completion, it’s time for the fun part - finishing touches!

• Cabinet hardware and light fixtures - small but impactful!

• Barstools, rugs, and decorative accents to bring warmth and personality.

• Organisational solutions like drawer dividers and pantry containers to maximise your storage.

Pro Tip: I love finishing a project with thoughtful styling that makes the space both functional and inviting, it’s like the cherry on top of all of your hard work (and patience).

9. Celebrate the Transformation!

Once the dust settles, take time to appreciate your brand new kitchen. Cook a special meal, invite friends over, and enjoy the transformation.
